WHY WON'T MY FILES WORK?

When people first start publishing things on the Internet, they often discover that their files don't work properly, images disappear, etc.  There are two main reasons for these problems.

First, unless you want your audience to download files for later use, posted files, documents, etc. must be in a format that can be viewed within a web browser.  Examples of files that cannot be viewed with a browser are files with the extensions .doc, .ppt, .mswmm, .pub, and .xls.

Second, html files that include embedded images, charts, etc. must be uploaded to the Internet along with those other files, and the html files must know where on your Internet server those other files are located.

It all sounds a bit complicated, but really it's not that bad.

First, when creating files that you want to view in a web browser, just be sure to save them in the correct format, preferably as a single file.  It's really very easy to do this, as outlined in the instructions below.

Second, when creating an html page such as a wiki page, be sure any images or other files that you include on your page are first uploaded to the site.  On pbwiki, just click "Upload Files" in the upper right corner.  Once you've uploaded the files, you can use them on your page and they won't "disappear" mysteriously.

IMPORTANT RULES: Each team will have their own private wiki.  Nobody but the members and Mr. Ling will have Internet access to this wiki.  Members of the wiki must adhere to all rules in the Responsible Use Policy of BSHS.  No member is permitted to invite anyone outside the team to view or join the wiki.  Students will not interact with any team wiki other than their own, using the account assigned by their teacher.  Failure to adhere to these rules, including inappropriate posts or attempting to enter a wiki using an alternate account, will certainly result in loss of computer and account access.  Such loss of access is, at the very least, likely to impact your grade for this course.

NOTE: many of the pages at this site are in the industry-standard Adobe Acrobat pdf format.  Download the free Adobe Reader™ here.
